Bob, regarding the vacant homes, the Humane Society said that if people noticed a suddenly vacant home and those people had pets, they suggested they look in the windows to see if the pet was still there.

Last year when I wrote about this, they had found a German Shepherd puppy dead in a crate in the garage. They found a large nearly starved dog in a bedroom of another home. They were able to save it.

BTW, the homes the Shelter guy was standing in front of were pretty new $200-250K homes.

I just can't fathom locking up a home leaving a dog or cat inside to die rather than taking it to the shelter. Some people are simply turning them loose to fend for themselves.

Wow Elaine...we aren't having extremes like that here (yet) However the temperature is getting hot and the electricity has gone out in some area due to storms. I think a campaign needs to be started to have people check on their neighborhood for vacant homes.

That is really sad...thanks for sharing.

I'm not even going to try to watch the video. We started having a problem here last year with people leaving pets behind. The Humane Society was finding them dead or almost dead and they were begging people to take them to the shelter. I did a post on the local issue at that time.

In our local news a few days ago, they mentioned an increase in "middle America" having to go to the food pantries for help, with an increase to requests for pet food while they were there. The news stations are doing more pet stories, trying to help with adoptions for the increase in pets relinguished to the shelters.

It's really sad.

We at Wags for Hope (www.wagsforhope.org) are starting a program that will work to help alleviate this problem in a small way. We are about to implement the "Wagging P.A.L.S. (Pets Adopt Loving Seniors)" program which pairs at risk shelter animals with seniors living alone in our community. If they are on a fixed income we will help subsidize the care and feeding. We are currently seeking donations to get this program under way. If anyone is interested pls. contact gabe@wagsforhope.org.

They recently sent out an email to their members list about many guinea pigs sitting in local shelters that need help. They also help chinchillas, degus, gerbils, hamsters, mice, and rats. Thanks!

Annie, You have plenty of space now AND NO LANDLORD. :) hook me up with Small angels website and I will shed some light on them too.

Elaine One down and many more to go. Thanks for stopping by and helping out.

Maggie??? Swing by your shelter, it's time to pick up a pet.

Candace Two in the video are working on me. Bandit (the last dog in video) and Shaquille (the barker) are two very nice dogs. Both would be fine with Buster and Benson. (I guess Bandit with a B would be a better fit.)
