People are not the only ones displaced by foreclosures

I took a trip to the Animal Control building the other day after someone told me about the increase in the amount of animals there. Not only have families had to give up their homes, but also their pets. Not all rentals allow pets and even in financial trouble, people do the right thing and offer them up for adoption. I can’t say that is true of all the animals there, because some were rescued from abandoned homes. Animals left to fend for themselves with no one to care for them. The housing situation is bad enough. These animals just want a new home.
I have two dogs of my own (one right from this shelter) and I know if my wife and daughter read this article, we will have more. So, I am begging you to spread the word and help these animals. I don’t have room for anymore. There is no more room on my bed for another dog and I am allergic to cats. I don’t need a bunny or another hamster.
If my words don’t do it for you…maybe this will…
You can contact Frederick County Animal Control at 301-600-1546 or stop by 1832 Rosemont Ave. While you are at it, fill out this application so you don’t waste any time. (don’t forget your checkbook)
Feel free to share this with others, the link, the presentation, the application…share your home with one of the many animals there too.
And by the way…if you don’t live in Frederick, I am sure this is happening at a shelter near you too.
Really… this should be the easiest fix to the Housing Crisis.

I couldn’t watch the whole video–I’m such a sucker for furry critters. I’m too far away to be of much help except to say: It’s not the pet’s fault, they had homes & families, they need homes & families, open your heart & homes if you can. The payback is priceless! (I’d rather live on the street than give up my Daisy Beagle!)

You are killing me with this. I wish I could take them all.

Ooooh, man.
Can I put that in the RES Blog? I want everyone possible to see that.
I bet this post lands some cute furry critters in some new homes. I also hope people will choose to bring their pets to the shelter rather than be cowardly and lock them in the house as they leave…
My heart is breaking it is also happening in Las Vegas and people are leaving them in the homes locked up. These are the innocents.

Nice Post Man! So sad I wish I could take some of them. Very creative way to use the RE shows. Cool!
The other Bob
Boomer, Amen buddy. And Daisy Legs would be right by your side no matter what.
CEG, Don’t we all?
Sarah, Like you have to ask! Please do.
Natalie, let’s hope. They deserve better
Chris, it’s a shame and widespread.
Other Bob, Thanks…Sarah started it.
I couldn’t watch! I would be driving to Maryland tomorrow. I already have 3 adopted cats. They make the best pets because they seem to know.

You’re killing me here - Please, under no circumstances show this to my wife or I’ll be driving down to Virginia for more dogs -
Its really hard when you get a foreclosure assignment and find someone has abandoned the family pet -
What is going through their minds when they just abandon an animal in a vacant, but locked home? - I can’t imagine leaving our Cisco alone, and I know Shiela would take him instead of me if there was only room for one in the car (and who could blame her?)

Linda, I know…
Bill, I’ll save you some gas, just drive to Frederick MD.
One of my favorite dogs came from a shelter in CT. She was an Irish Setter we named Kelly and she rode in the car with me everywhere we went and ran with me when I went horseback riding.
My horse and dog were almost the same color. We had a blast for years together.
Hi Boss,
I guess you didn’t think I had time to read FOF with all of the work you have me doing, but I come in super early so I can scan it off the clock. You’ve made it a favorite…
Well, after reading this I’m off to the Shelter to find a new kid. Somebody up there is bound to love me! We have a 16 year old cat, “Kitty-Man” who has a couple years left to train an up-start and our 6 year old cocker (who we love) needs an older mentor - he’s hopeless - (no offense Toby)
Sorry nothing will get done at the office today
but since you started this I’m sure you’ll understand.
P.S. I’ll probably need about a week off to acclaimate everyone at home, don’t you think?
Thanks for this purrfect idea!
Gratefully, Your Assistant, Martie
MARTIE!!!!
(do we need an office pet?)
Jay, time to fill that hole in your life.
I was waiting for you to OK that! What a big heart you have!
That video is killing me! I’m on the fundraising committee with Small Angels Rescue (rescue for hamsters, rats, mice, guinea pigs, chinchillas…) and the rescue president has mentioned an increase in small animals given up due to foreclosure as well. It looks like I’ll be volunteering to be a guinea pig foster home pretty soon! Especially now that I’ll have space in that new house (thanks to you!)
Thank goodness I just adopted a dog from our shelter on Saturday, or I’d be headed there right now. Very powerful, Bob. I hope it results in new homes for these wonderful animals!
I should know better than to click on play, especially after having been warned. ::sniff:: ::sniff::
Nice way to drum up some support for a noble cause. Way to go.

Bob- what a sobering video. my heart breaks for this wonderful ‘best man’s friends’…I have two little furry fellas, otherwise I would head over to my local adoption center! Great awareness post! Thank you!
Taco & Bella’s mommy from Arizona!
Annie, You have plenty of space now AND NO LANDLORD.
hook me up with Small angels website and I will shed some light on them too.
Elaine One down and many more to go. Thanks for stopping by and helping out.
Maggie??? Swing by your shelter, it’s time to pick up a pet.
Candace Two in the video are working on me. Bandit (the last dog in video) and Shaquille (the barker) are two very nice dogs. Both would be fine with Buster and Benson. (I guess Bandit with a B would be a better fit.)

They recently sent out an email to their members list about many guinea pigs sitting in local shelters that need help. They also help chinchillas, degus, gerbils, hamsters, mice, and rats. Thanks!
Bob- great use of RES! I will make one for ERAHouston.
thanks,

We at Wags for Hope (www.wagsforhope.org) are starting a program that will work to help alleviate this problem in a small way. We are about to implement the “Wagging P.A.L.S. (Pets Adopt Loving Seniors)” program which pairs at risk shelter animals with seniors living alone in our community. If they are on a fixed income we will help subsidize the care and feeding. We are currently seeking donations to get this program under way. If anyone is interested pls. contact gabe@wagsforhope.org.
I couldn’t watch all of it either but yeay for the Shelter. It’s sad how many spokes there are in the foreclosure wheel that keeps on spinning.

[...] a foreclosure has on the animals in a family and how shelters are swelling past capacity. You can read his most excellent post here. This is one real estate issue that is not just local, because abandoned pets exist here as well [...]
I’m not even going to try to watch the video. We started having a problem here last year with people leaving pets behind. The Humane Society was finding them dead or almost dead and they were begging people to take them to the shelter. I did a post on the local issue at that time.
In our local news a few days ago, they mentioned an increase in “middle America” having to go to the food pantries for help, with an increase to requests for pet food while they were there. The news stations are doing more pet stories, trying to help with adoptions for the increase in pets relinguished to the shelters.
It’s really sad.
Elaine Reeses last blog post..You know you might be a bad home inspector when …
Wow Elaine…we aren’t having extremes like that here (yet) However the temperature is getting hot and the electricity has gone out in some area due to storms. I think a campaign needs to be started to have people check on their neighborhood for vacant homes.
That is really sad…thanks for sharing.
Bob, regarding the vacant homes, the Humane Society said that if people noticed a suddenly vacant home and those people had pets, they suggested they look in the windows to see if the pet was still there.
Last year when I wrote about this, they had found a German Shepherd puppy dead in a crate in the garage. They found a large nearly starved dog in a bedroom of another home. They were able to save it.
BTW, the homes the Shelter guy was standing in front of were pretty new $200-250K homes.
I just can’t fathom locking up a home leaving a dog or cat inside to die rather than taking it to the shelter. Some people are simply turning them loose to fend for themselves.
