Frederick Parks in the winter

That time of year again…Icy roads, snow, no heat, broken water lines and the list of emergencies go on for what can cause delays in our Frederick County schools. Snow seems to be the biggest problem. I have never seen school called off for such a little (or no) amount of snow. I guess growing up in South Western PA, I have become conditioned to snowy conditions. It seems as soon as the call for snow is made, there is a look of panic on everyone’s face. The market for Toilet paper, milk and bread quadruple. What is it about these staples that everyone has to stock up on them? Does the use of bread and milk make you use more toilet paper? I just don’t know. And it never fails, I am always down to my last roll when a snow storm is about to hit. Guess I should buy more cheese if they’re out of stock.

So here are a few ways you can find out if school is going to be closed or have a 2 hour delay. The local radio stations are always up to date with school closings and delays;

WAFY 103.1 FM
WFMD 930 AM
WFRE 99.9 FM
WARX 106.9 FM

You can check out the television channel 18 on Comcast in the Frederick Area. Or you can do like I do, sign up for notifications from your child’s school at The Find Out First website. This will send you information straight to your email as it happens. Quite a few people carry mobile PDAs, blackberries or at least at a minimum check their email often. Cancellations are always nice to know quickly too.

All of this information can be found on the Frederick County Schools official website. You can even tell whats for lunch today…Mmmm Hot Turkey Sandwiches with Fluffy Whipped Potatoes.
