Stink Bugs in Frederick MD

Ewwww… nasty… More than nasty, they are a nuisance. Hagerstown and Boonsboro have them much worse than we do. You’ve probably seen them flying around hanging out on warm rocks or surfaces. BUT DON’T STEP ON IT!!! Ahh…you did…that smell is nasty.
I decided to find out a little bit more about our malodorous friends. It seems they have been on our MISC watch list. We have a government agency tracking this stuff. Their official name is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug or Halyomorpha halys for all of you Entomologist wanna-bes. Originally from Korea, Japan and China, these little buggers started somewhere in Allentown PA (thanks Jason) and have hitchhiked their way to our state. They will most likely find their way into your house…seems what they do in the winter. Call an exterminator…they should have something to battle the invasion.
You might want to contact our Maryland Invasive Species Council to let them know how bad this infestation is getting.
So what are your thoughts? How bad are they in your neighborhood?
Personally, I think it stinks…

I know I have seen a bug that looks like that but not here in Cleveland. I had no idea! If you watched any of the Yankees/Indians games the bugs we DO have attacked the Yankees Friday night LOL. Our media was calling them Canadian soldiers but they looked like regular nats (knats?) to me.
And ya gotta admit it’s kinda cute; it looks like it’s smiling!
Carole, I did see that on the Yanks game the Gnats were bad…not to be confused with the Nats down this way in DC.
(by the way, that’s his butt your looking at!
)
I watched part of that game. I felt sorry for the players, it looked like some sort of Biblical Plague was cast upon them. Kudos to the players, I know I would have turned in my cleats for mosquito netting!
I just had to take your bait. I’m so predictable. So I googled it and ended up here. Does Jason know you’re blaming your plague on him?
You thought I was kidding…Number one for Stink Bugs in Frederick MD!!! LOL
Love the title of your blog Bob. Down here in Silver Spring I haven’t seen any stinkbugs. I guess it’s not as rural as a large part of Frederick still. I think Frederick is beautiful – love to go crusing the shops in that old quaint part of town, see the civil war medical museum near that cool river walk type place, What do you call it??
You can KEEP YER STINKIN’ BUGS!
Yeah–what Jay said! Our bugs are in hiding today – too cold for them – now about people who bug me – they’re still out and about!
Boomer
this would “bug” me – we do not have these little critters I will let you and Jason keep them -
Debbie, That would be Carroll Creek. You can see that area in my Flickr account. The really renovated that whole area.
Jay, I’m sending them back to Allentown
Boomer, we are FINALLY getting some cool weather.
Thesa, I can mail them to you!
KK, I would have too…that game was simply amazing. I have been to games with a lot of bugs but never that bad.
I’m just glad it wasn’t my fault. Maybe you can borrow some of Bonita Springs wild iguanas to eat ‘em.
Then we’ll have stinky iguanas with salmanella…no thank you.
And once they arrive, it seems like you can’t get rid of them!
I think Jason is responsible for the infestation.
We have millionsof stinkbugs, they are in , around and ON my house. Pleae someone come get them and take them away!!! they are the nastiest critterss to have in the house although they dont hurt anyone, they appear out of nowhere, and live there
Oh my…LOL I know what you mean. I have them inside my fireplace. Thank God I have a glass enclosure. It’s like watching an ant farm.
I’m in College Park and our yard is completely infested. Yesterday they were trying to get in the house in swarms. We spent 2 hours trying to kill them while sealing off all windows. Raid isn’t strong enough for them. Nasty, nasty, nasty! One was crawling on my bare back (had on a tank top). I still have the heebie geebies. Anyone know when they should die?
They are really bad this year and seem to continue to move south. I hear that some exterminators can treat your home, but it has be the right time. Just before they lay eggs for next year. Whenever that might be. JUST DON’T SQUISH THEM… : )
I just killed sixteen of the little !@#$%^&*’s. HELP or my wife is goint to kill me first.
Just found three more. What’s going on ?
I think it’s a conspiracy. You are not alone. There are plenty of husbands out there suffering because of this stinky nuisance. My friend just bought a popup camper from a man whose wife made him sell it after 2 trips out. They were bombarded with stink bugs and that is all she needed.
They clean up well with a shop vac…not the house vac. That will only blow their lovely aroma around the house.
Good luck on your marriage.
I recently moved to the hagerstown area in Maryland and yes this stink bug is a big problem in my home, I’ve never seen any thing like this before, how do I eradicate this stink bug? my home is back to washinghton county reservation and across the street is acres of corn fields, could this be a large part of the problem?
Thanks,
I hear they are really bad in Washington County. I would call an exterminator. If they spray at the right time they can reduce the numbers of them, but there is no guarantee. I don’t think the corn has anything to do with it…they are a pain no matter where you are. Good Luck.
we have them pretty bad here in pittsburghthey get in your walls and when it gets like 40 degrees out in the winter before long they show up on the curtains…..periodicly i clean the dead ones from the porches…i am my own stink bug bouncer…my pit bull piches in and helps…he likes to bark at them..scare them and then they stink
at wits end
dave
You are not alone…everyone’s at wits end with them. I’m glad your dog helps. Maybe if he barks a little quieter it won’t scare the stink out of them.
We have them here in Hagerstown! They are awful! i cant stand them! they smell so bad it makes me sick! and they are soo gross u can never get rid of them! i feel lke they are always popping out from somewhere! I want to move just to get away from them
Don’t move. Now is not a good time to sell. And besides, as bad as they are…they will most likely follow you.
did you know that stink bugs create their own antifreeze to stay warm when they over winter. These bugs also like to live in your porch umbrella while the umbrella’s in the shed over winter. When you open the umbrella in spring 50 to 100 stink bug greet you …i love all animals and insects.Insect have such a short life span…i wish people could be a little more mindful and not step (kill) on every bug/insect they see.
Okay, these things are definitely NOT cute. I visited Hagerstown in JUNE and a bunch of them got into my car when I left the windows open. Is is now MARCH in New York and I am STILL finding these things – alive!!! – in my car. I thought they were gone but I just had a major car service and they must have been living beneath the seats and in the engine compartment. Disgusting. If you “live” in your car a great deal of the time, as I do, and eat in it, having these things crawling around will definitely gross you out!
I rent a house in Grapeville, PA. I have never seen these bugs until this past winter, you’d hear a buzzing & there thry were! I would find at least 2-3 a day. I put one in a bag (I was freaking out that I had cockroaches!) & asked guys at work & they told me they were “stink bugs” so I ended up here! These things are GROSS! I want to know how to get rid of them & since I rent, I would assume my landlord would be responsible for the cost?
I just got home from work yesterday (I live in Smithsburg MD) and my WHOLE HOUSE was covered. I couldn’t open the garage doors, as they would have swarmed inside the garage. What can be done? anyone know?
Just walking outside they fly all around you and land on you…ewwwwwwwwwww HELP
I live in Columbia, MD, and these things are everywhere! Talk about annoying! For the first time, I can actually say I’m looking forward to winter so these things can DIE and go away! Bad enough we’ll have a decent cicada batch in 2011 (not the big one, but one of the minor ones). Don’t need these stupid things too.
DO NOT CALL AN EXTERMINATOR – I have been dealing with this now for two years. These things are coming from the outside and due to Federal Law, the licensed firms can not use the only chemical strong enough to kill them in quantities that work. The effect of the pioson only lasts a few days and they live long enought to spread thougout the house as they die. A day or two later they are followed by the next wave. They are relentless. I remove hundreds from my house every couple of days and thousands from the exterior of my home every weekend and they keep coming. Potent bug bombs with PERMETHRIN can be used in late winter to stop them from hatching in the house in the spring. You can buy this at Home Depot. Save your money – Don’t waist it on exterminators. It makes no difference.
Sheesh these things are annoying and crazy. I hate useless animals like these. They don’t pollinate, they don’t help in decomposition. All I found them doing is walking as a slow as the matrix. It’s very annoying having pathetic bugs flying into my house every time I try letting my dogs inside. They swarm more than zombies.
Just seriously. Do i have to nuke my family’s just to exterminate these jerks.
These are awful — they’re popping up all over my house in Rockville — is there any way to find out what they’re clinging to and “living” in, or do I have to turn every part of my house upside down/inside out to find them?
I have seen a ton of these on the courts when I have been playing tennis this summer! It makes sense now that you said that they like to hang out on warm rocks or surfaces.
I didn’t know what they were until I saw the picture in your post. Glad I didn’t step on them, I just pushed them away with my racquet.
Jason
I have them in Clarksburg. Even though my house is pristine, and doesn’t seem to have any holes in it, they find their way in. I woke up from a nap the other day and a small one was on my head! Not good!
Anyhow, I have an electric portable bug zapper that looks like a tennis racket. If you use one of those, they don’t smell and they die very quickly.
Well since they come from ASIA LET’S CALL THEM AND SEE WHAT THEY DO TO GET RID OF THEM…OH YEAH they’re here in the states so that’s how they got rid of these things..I also read these things bite too..
I think I have these Stink Bugs. Your web site says to use this Bug Bomb will this hurt my dogs?
Everybody with stink bug problems. Buy Professional stink bug insecticide and treat all cracks & crevices on the outside of the sunny side of the house. It takes several hours before you start seeing results, but it will kill them. You can buy stuff online.
Google AllPest Express
Im in Maryland and have seen them around the state. They get in the house all day long, seeming to just appear from nowhere. They lurk in the cracks and crevices of everything, and show up unannounced. It’s really driving us crazy here!!! Fuck these bugs, they suck ass!
I keep hearing the phrase “harmless to people”. These things are getting into the inner workings if people’s vehicles, equipment, tools, etc. At some point, these bugs are going to cost us significant amounts of money in repairs to things including our homes. I’ve seen hundreds packed inside a single power tool stored in a shed. Harmless to people but …..maybe not your wallet in the long run.
They are definitely among us!! I’ve been battling them for more than a year and have created my own website dedicated to Killing Stinkbugs: StinkbugWars.com.
